"The time has come," the Walrus said,
"To talk of many things:
Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax--
Of cabbages--and kings--
And why the sea is boiling hot--
And whether pigs have wings."
From the poem The Walrus and The Carpenter as recited by Tweedledum and Tweedledee in Alice in Wonderland.
Kind of sounds like American Politicians, doesn't it?
When did the march toward Socialism begin in the United States?
Well, it all began with Woodrow Wilson in 1913. Elected as the 28th President in 1912, he is solely responsible for sending us down this twisted path. In his first term as President, Wilson persuaded a Democratic Congress to pass a legislative agenda that few presidents have equaled, remaining unmatched up until the New Deal in 1933. This agenda included the Federal Reserve Act, Federal Trade Commission Act, the Clayton Antitrust Act, the Federal Farm Loan Act and an income tax. Child labor was curtailed by the Keating–Owen Act of 1916, but the U.S. Supreme Court declared it unconstitutional in 1918. Wilson also had Congress pass the Adamson Act, which imposed an 8-hour workday for railroads. Although considered a modern liberal visionary giant as President, Wilson was deeply racist in his thoughts and politics and his administration racially segregated federal employees and the Navy.
Wilson was succeeded in office by Republican Warren G. Harding, who promised a return to normalcy by moving away from the "progressivism" of the early part of the 20th century. Domestically, Harding signed the first federal child welfare program, dealt with striking mining and railroad workers in part by supporting an 8-hour work day, and oversaw a 50% unemployment rate drop. He also set up the Bureau of the Budget to prepare the United States federal budget. Harding advocated an anti-lynching bill to curb violence against African Americans, but it failed to pass. In foreign affairs, Harding spurned the League of Nations and (Congress having rejected the Treaty of Versailles) signed a World War I peace treaty with Germany and Austria separate from the other Allies. His greatest foreign policy achievement came in the Washington Naval Conference of 1921-22, in which the world's major naval powers agreed on a naval limitations program that held sway for a decade.
Harding was succeeded, on his sudden death in 1923, by Calvin Coolidge, who was elected in his own right in 1924. Coolidge restored public confidence in the White House after the scandals of his predecessor's administration, and left office with considerable popularity. As a Coolidge biographer put it, "He embodied the spirit and hopes of the middle class, could interpret their longings and express their opinions. That he did represent the genius of the average is the most convincing proof of his strength." Some later criticized Coolidge as part of a general criticism of laissez-faire government. His reputation underwent a renaissance during the Ronald Reagan Administration, but the ultimate assessment of his presidency is still divided between those who approve of his reduction of the size of government programs and those who believe the federal government should be more involved in regulating and controlling the economy.
Coolidge was succeeded by Herbert Hoover. In the presidential election of 1928, Hoover easily won the Republican nomination, despite having no elected-office experience. Hoover is the most recent cabinet secretary to be elected President of the United States, as well as one of only two Presidents (along with William Howard Taft) elected without electoral experience or high military rank. America was at the height of an economic bubble at the time, facilitating a landslide victory for Hoover over Democrat Al Smith. Hoover, a globally experienced engineer, believed strongly in the Efficiency Movement, which held that the government and the economy were riddled with inefficiency and waste, and could be improved by experts who could identify the problems and solve them. He also believed in the importance of volunteerism and of the role of individuals in society and the economy. Hoover, who had made a small fortune in mining, was the first of two Presidents to redistribute their salary (President Kennedy was the other; he donated all his paychecks to charity). When the Wall Street Crash of 1929 struck less than eight months after he took office, Hoover tried to combat the ensuing Great Depression with government enforced efforts, public works projects such as the Hoover Dam, tariffs such as the Smoot-Hawley Tariff, an increase in the top tax bracket from 25% to 63%, and increases in corporate taxes. These initiatives did not produce economic recovery during his term, but served as the groundwork for some policies incorporated in Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal.
Hoover was succeeded by Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who was reelected three times and served from 1933 until his death in 1945. Roosevelt was perhaps most famous for the New Deal. In his first hundred days in office, which began March 4, 1933, Roosevelt spearheaded major legislation and issued a profusion of executive orders that instituted the New Deal—a variety of programs designed to produce relief (government jobs for the unemployed), recovery (economic growth), and reform (through regulation of Wall Street, banks and transportation). The economy improved rapidly from 1933 to 1937, but then relapsed into a deep recession. The bipartisan Conservative Coalition that formed in 1937 prevented his packing the Supreme Court. For the rest of his days in office it blocked all proposals for major liberal legislation (apart from a minimum wage law). It abolished many of the relief programs when unemployment practically vanished during the war. Most of the regulations on business continued in effect until they ended about 1975–1985, except for the regulation of Wall Street by the Securities and Exchange Commission, which still exists. Along with several smaller programs, major surviving programs include the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, which was created in 1933, and Social Security, which Congress passed in 1935.
Hoover was succeeded upon his death by Harry S. Truman. While Germany surrendered a few weeks after Truman assumed the Presidency, the war with Japan was expected to last another year or more. Truman ordered the use of atomic weapons against Japan, intending to force Japan's surrender and spare American lives in an invasion; the decision remains controversial. His presidency was a turning point in foreign affairs, as the nation supported an internationalist foreign policy in conjunction with European allies. Working closely with Congress, Truman assisted in the founding of the United Nations, issued the Truman Doctrine to contain communism, and passed the $13 billion Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe, including the Axis Powers of both world wars, whereas the wartime ally Soviet Union became the peacetime enemy, and the Cold War began. He oversaw the Berlin Airlift in 1948 and the creation of NATO in 1949. When communist North Korea invaded South Korea in 1950, he immediately sent in U.S. troops and gained UN approval for the Korean War. After initial success, the UN forces were thrown back by Chinese intervention and the conflict was stalemated through the final years of Truman's presidency. On domestic issues, bills endorsed by Truman often faced opposition from a conservative Congress dominated by the South, but his administration successfully guided the American economy through post-war economic challenges. He said civil rights was a moral priority, and submitted the first comprehensive legislation in 1948, and issued Executive Orders to start racial integration of the military and federal agencies that year.
Truman was succeeded by Dwight Eisenhower. Eisenhower entered the 1952 presidential race as a Republican to counter the non-interventionism of Senator Robert A. Taft and to crusade against "Communism, Korea and corruption". He won by a landslide, defeating Democrat Adlai Stevenson and ending two decades of the New Deal Coalition. In the first year of his presidency, Eisenhower deposed the leader of Iran in the 1953 Iranian coup d'état and used nuclear threats to conclude the Korean War with China. His New Look policy of nuclear deterrence gave priority to inexpensive nuclear weapons while reducing the funding for conventional military forces; the goal was to keep pressure on the Soviet Union and reduce federal deficits. In 1954, Eisenhower first articulated the domino theory in his description of the threat presented by the spread of communism. The Congress agreed to his request in 1955 for the Formosa Resolution, which enabled him to prevent Chinese communist aggression against Chinese nationalists and established the U.S. policy of defending Taiwan. When the Soviets launched Sputnik in 1957, he had to play catch-up in the space race. Eisenhower forced Israel, the UK, and France to end their invasion of Egypt during the Suez Crisis of 1956. In 1958, he sent 15,000 U.S. troops to Lebanon to prevent the pro-Western government from falling to a Nasser-inspired revolution. Near the end of his term, his efforts to set up a summit meeting with the Soviets collapsed because of the U-2 incident.[ In his 1961 farewell address to the nation, Eisenhower expressed his concerns about future dangers of massive military spending, especially deficit spending, and coined the term "military–industrial complex".
On the domestic front, he covertly opposed Joseph McCarthy and contributed to the end of McCarthyism by openly invoking the modern expanded version of executive privilege. He otherwise left most political activity to his Vice President, Richard Nixon. He was a moderate conservative who continued New Deal agencies and expanded Social Security.
Among his enduring innovations, he launched the Interstate Highway System; the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which led to the internet, among many invaluable outputs; the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), driving peaceful discovery in space; the establishment of strong science education via the National Defense Education Act; and encouraging peaceful use of nuclear power via amendments to the Atomic Energy Act.
John Fitzgerald "Jack" Kennedy (May 29, 1917 – November 22, 1963), commonly known by his initials JFK, was an American politician who served as the 35th President of the United States from January 1961 until he was assassinated in November 1963.
After military service as commander of Motor Torpedo Boats PT-109 and PT-59 during World War II in the South Pacific, Kennedy represented Massachusetts's 11th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1947 to 1953 as a Democrat. Thereafter, he served in the U.S. Senate from 1953 until 1960. Kennedy defeated vice president and Republican candidate Richard Nixon in the 1960 U.S. presidential election. At age 43, he was the youngest to have been elected to the office, the second-youngest president (after Theodore Roosevelt), and the first person born in the 20th century to serve as president. To date[update], Kennedy has been the only Roman Catholic president and the only president to have won a Pulitzer Prize.Events during his presidency included the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Space Race—by initiating Project Apollo (which would culminate in the moon landing), the building of the Berlin Wall, the African-American Civil Rights Movement, and increased U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War.
Lyndon B. Johnson succeeded to the Presidency on the assassination of JFK in 1963. Johnson was greatly supported by the Democratic Party and as President, he was responsible for designing the "Great Society" legislation that included laws that upheld civil rights, public broadcasting, Medicare, Medicaid, environmental protection, aid to education, aid to the arts, urban and rural development, and his "War on Poverty." Assisted in part by a growing economy, the War on Poverty helped millions of Americans rise above the poverty line during Johnson's presidency. Civil rights bills signed by Johnson banned racial discrimination in public facilities, interstate commerce, the workplace, and housing, and a powerful voting rights act guaranteed full voting rights for citizens of all races. With the passage of the sweeping Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, the country's immigration system was reformed and all national origins quotas were removed. Johnson was renowned for his domineering personality and the "Johnson treatment," his coercion of powerful politicians in order to advance legislation. Meanwhile, Johnson escalated American involvement in the Vietnam War. In 1964, Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which essentially gave Johnson the power to use any degree of military force in Southeast Asia without having to ask for an official declaration of war. The number of American military personnel in Vietnam increased dramatically, from 16,000 advisors in non-combat roles in 1963, to 550,000 with many in combat roles in early 1968. American casualties soared and the peace process bogged down. Massive bombing campaigns targeting North Vietnamese cities were ordered, and millions of gallons of the herbicide Agent Orange were sprayed on Vietnamese land. Despite the growing number of American troops and the sustained bombing, the war showed no signs of ending and the public began to doubt the administration's optimistic claims that victory was close at hand. Growing unease with the war stimulated a large, angry antiwar movement based especially on university campuses in the U.S. and abroad. Johnson faced further troubles when summer riots broke out in most major cities after 1965, and crime rates soared, as his opponents raised demands for "law and order" policies. While he began his presidency with widespread approval, support for Johnson declined as the public became further upset with both the war and the growing violence at home. The Democratic Party split in multiple feuding factions, and after Johnson did poorly in the 1968 New Hampshire primary, he ended his bid for reelection. Republican Richard Nixon was elected to succeed him, as the New Deal coalition that had dominated presidential politics for 36 years collapsed. Johnson died four years after he left office. Historians argue that Johnson's presidency marked the peak of modern liberalism in the United States after the New Deal era. Johnson is ranked favorably by some historians because of his domestic policies.
Johnson was succeeded by Richard Nixon. Although Nixon initially escalated America's involvement in the Vietnam War, he subsequently ended U.S. involvement by 1973. Nixon's visit to the People's Republic of China in 1972 opened communications between the two nations and eventually led to the normalization of diplomatic relations. He initiated détente and the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty with the Soviet Union the same year. Domestically, his administration generally embraced policies that transferred power from Washington to the states. Among other things, he launched initiatives to fight cancer and illegal drugs, imposed wage and price controls, enforced desegregation of Southern schools, implemented environmental reforms, and introduced legislation to reform healthcare and welfare. Though he presided over the lunar landings beginning with Apollo 11, he replaced manned space exploration with shuttle missions. He was re-elected by a landslide in 1972. Nixon's second term saw a crisis in the Middle East, resulting in an oil embargo and the restart of the Middle East peace process, as well as a continuing series of revelations about the Watergate scandal. The scandal escalated, costing Nixon much of his political support, and on August 9, 1974, he resigned in the face of almost certain impeachment and removal from office. After his resignation, he accepted a pardon issued by his successor, Gerald Ford.
Nixon was succeeded by Gerald Ford. He was the first person appointed to the Vice Presidency under the terms of the 25th Amendment, after Spiro Agnew resigned. When he became president upon Richard Nixon's resignation on August 9, 1974, he became the first and to date only person to have served as both Vice President and President of the United States without being elected by the Electoral College. Before ascending to the Vice Presidency, Ford served nearly 25 years as the Representative from Michigan's 5th congressional district, eight of them as the Republican Minority Leader. As President, Ford signed the Helsinki Accords, marking a move toward détente in the Cold War. With the conquest of South Vietnam by North Vietnam nine months into his presidency, U.S. involvement in Vietnam essentially ended. Domestically, Ford presided over the worst economy in the four decades since the Great Depression, with growing inflation and a recession during his tenure. One of his more controversial acts was to grant a presidential pardon to President Richard Nixon for his role in the Watergate scandal. During Ford's incumbency, foreign policy was characterized in procedural terms by the increased role Congress began to play, and by the corresponding curb on the powers of the President. In 1976, Ford defeated Ronald Reagan for the Republican nomination, but narrowly lost the presidential election to Democrat Jimmy Carter.
Ford was succeeded by Jimmy Carter. During Carter's term as President, he created two new cabinet-level departments: the Department of Energy and the Department of Education. He established a national energy policy that included conservation, price control, and new technology. In foreign affairs, Carter pursued the Camp David Accords, the Panama Canal Treaties, the second round of Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT II), and returned the Panama Canal Zone to Panama. He took office during a period of international stagnation and inflation, which persisted throughout his term. The end of his presidential tenure was marked by the 1979–1981 Iran hostage crisis, the 1979 energy crisis, the Three Mile Island nuclear accident, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the United States boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow (the only U.S. boycott in Olympic history), and the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington state. By 1980, Carter's popularity had eroded. He survived a primary challenge from Ted Kennedy for the Democratic Party nomination in the 1980 election, but lost the general election to Ronald Reagan, the Republican candidate. On January 20, 1981, minutes after Carter's term in office ended, the 52 U.S. captives held at the U.S. embassy in Iran were released, ending the 444-day Iran hostage crisis.
Carter was succeeded by Ronald Reagan. Reagan was succeeded by George HW Bush. Bush was succeeded by William Clinton. Clinton was succeeded by Bush's son. George W. Bush. George W. Bush has been succeeded by Barack Hussein Obama.
My purpose in quoting these pieces from Wikipedia is to show that the United States has been on a steady decline into Socialism since 1913. Nearly every president since Woodrow Wilson has either supported or implemented one or more programs that has contributed to this decline. President Obama is merely the latest in a long line of more government, less freedom politicos. He is also the most blatent usurper of freedom and the perpetrator of the largest tax increases in the history of our nation.
There is but one way to stop this decline short of armed revolution, which I do not advocate. That is to convene a Constitutional Convention and propose new Amendments to the Constitution, among which should be Term Limits for Senators and Representatives, Salary Restrictions for the President and all Congressmen and women, Pork spending limits, Removal of ALL autopilot programs, and an Amendment to Direct Defense Spending. The last Constitutional Amendment should be one severally limiting the power of the President to write law through presidential Executive Orders. Obamas Executive Orders will be covered thoroughly in a later blog post. They will shock you in their scope. The State of Indiana is making plans to hold a Constitutional Convention as I'm writing this. Pray that they make it happen.
In future posts, I will also be discussing the Amendments already in the Constitution, Supreme Court rulings and how they have affected them and us. And how the Supreme Court has upheld the march toward Socialism in most rulings regarding the Constitution.

Friends, Former Friends, Conservatives and Progressives
Today, I am saddened by the loss of a friend. Not a physical loss, because he's still among the living, but a loss nonetheless. I'll call him JW because I don't need to embarrass him by shouting his name all over the place and making him feel he's the object of ridicule and scorn. He is not. We just happen to have gone down wildly divergent paths in life, and he, rather than checking facts, just followed blindly what the Progressive (read left leftwing) was espousing. He took their every word and made it Gospel, and like so many others, now kneels at the foot of the Obamessiah and worships.
It all started innocently enough with a few political e-mails going back and forth between us and a few political jabs by both of us towards the others beliefs. When I challenged him to a good legitimate and logical debate, which is something I love to do, he accepted the challenge. The problem was that he never once offered a good legitimate argument. All he could do was spout the left-wing talking points that he learned at the feet of his main prophet, Ted Koppell (the Canadian-born Euro-Socialist mouthpiece for Nightline for way too many years).
Finally, in the end, all he could do was use the tried-too-often Progressive technique of name-calling. When I called him on that, and challenged him to come up with at least one reasoned argument for his positions, his responses turned into a jumble of non- and incomplete sentences that made absolutely no sense. He continued in this vein until I could no longer take it anymore and told him he was not only a fool but a damned-fool, and until he could learn the art of rational thought, I no longer wished to correspond. He didn't take no mas seriously, and continued with two more e-mails.
The kicker to this is that his parents and my parents lived across the street from each other. We grew up in a small town and went through school together. I say together, but JW is actually three years older than I. His parents and my parents were very good friends, and even when his mother was in a nursing facility in another small town, my mother would drive down at least three times a week to visit her. They shared the same Conservative political beliefs, the same Conservative Methodist-Episcopal upbringing and adulthood. It is my opinion (and it's only an opinion) that JW has betrayed his parents and everything they fought for to give him the good life he has and of which he has taken advantage. His year-younger sister has kept her core Conservative values and tenets that were instilled in us as children, yet still she questions with reason and does not follow blindly down the path.
She, like me, believes in the equality of Opportunity that America offers does not guarantee equality of Outcome. Those who do not take advantage of Opportunity will never know the joy of having the best Outcome afforded by those Opportunities. There will be many more blog sessions on the Constitution of the United States of America.
I firmly believe in the Constitution as written and amended. It is NOT a living, breathing document, but rather a guide to keep our Republic on a straight path. Our country was established as a Republic with the best of rules given over the years for the success of a Republic with tendencies towards Democracy. It was set up this way, because Democracies generally fail after short runs. Ours has endured for well over 230 years because of the way it was laid out in the governing documents. It will continue for another 230 years only if the Euro-socialistic fascists such as Obama, Pelosi, and Reid are not allowed to make wholesale changes without benefit of the amendment process. If you want to change the Constitution, author an amendment, get Congress to pass the amendment, and send it to the states for ratification. That is the only way that our government can be legally changed. That is the way spelled out in great detail in the Constitution itself.
To my now former friend JW -- good bye and good luck with the rest of your life.
This blog is called the Conservative Rambler for a reason, and I've rambled long enough. Until next time, I remain your humble host and hopefully friend.

How I Made $55.00 While sitting in my recliner…
Every now and again, you hear about something and your reaction is W.. H.. A.. T? At that time I normally dismiss the subject without giving it any more thought. This happened to me in February when I was approached by someone regarding an opportunity to create an additional stream of income. I already have several income opportunities that keeps me quite busy and there is only so much time to go around and so much energy that I have to expend.
The other day another friend of mine ran this crazy thing past me once more. This time, being more open minded, I listened more intently and even asked questions. I tried with all my mind to find fault with the program and I just couldn't’t – so I decided to ‘throw my hat into the ring’. What I really like about the business is the simplicity. Anyone, so long as they can read and write can participate. It takes no skill whatsoever. It takes no time whatsoever. It takes no education whatsoever. There is no product to buy …ever. Best of all…it is affordable. It won’t cost you $100 a month for an auto ship. It is tailor made for our busy lifestyles of the day.
Okay, so what did I have to do to get paid? I simply entered 10 license plates into a website which was my requirement for the entire month. You read it correctly! The funniest thing is that my friend actually went out to a local shopping center, gathered the information for me while I sat in my recliner, and the rest is history. I joined the business for $124.95 which included the website access, inputted my license plates numbers, checked my commission status and there it was $55.00 which will be direct deposited into my bank account. You have a choice of receiving a paper check or direct deposit.
Let me ask you, “Who do you know that could not do what I just did”? That’s the reason 500 people a day are joining this company. It is what I call…’idiot proof’!
In the interest of time, I am going to share a brief video with you that explains why you can make money collecting plate numbers and sharing the opportunity to do the same with your closest friends and associates. It is a very legitimate business and your participation just might provide a pretty handsome additional income stream for your family. I encourage you to keep an open mind and join the team if you like what you see. There is one thing that I can guarantee to you and that is that you will never again be able to pass that car on the road without thinking about the money you could be making. Take a look and ask yourself….What if it were true?
